Free software for students: what is actually free, and what quietly starts charging
Check student software renewal, billing, country eligibility and export deadlines before signing up. Official examples from GitHub, JetBrains, Autodesk and Adobe.
Start with the exit condition, not the word free
A student offer can require renewed proof of enrolment, expire without a new payment, or convert into a paid subscription. Those are different outcomes. Before applying, record the plan name, eligibility requirements, end date, next charge and cancellation method. If the terms do not tell you what happens at expiry, ask the vendor rather than treating silence as a promise.
This guide reviews the official renewal, licence and billing sources listed below, read on October 3, 2026. It is not a hands-on account test or a fresh price check of every linked offer. Each offer page has its own evidence and checking date.
GitHub approval is not automatic activation of every partner offer
GitHub's Student Developer Pack terms say student validation lasts two years before revalidation. That does not make every partner benefit last two years. Partners set their own terms, can change their offers, and may restrict redemption after a previous trial. Re-verifying or opening a new account does not reset a time-limited offer.
If you already have Pack access, inspect the current partner offer and redemption instructions before applying elsewhere. Do not assume approval activated a JetBrains account, cloud credit or any other partner subscription. Put the partner's expiry date in your record, not just GitHub's student-validation date.
JetBrains: renew the Student Pack in your account
JetBrains' current Student Pack page describes annual renewal through your JetBrains Account. Its renewal FAQ also points to the reminder email sent two weeks before expiry. Save the actual expiry date and keep an email address you can still access after changing schools.
The page accepts a university email address, an ISIC/ITIC card or GitHub Student Developer Pack as verification routes. A verification route is not a promise that every applicant qualifies or that a separate partner account is already active. Check the requirements for your program before applying.
Autodesk: the file-retrieval deadline matters too
Autodesk says Education plan access expires after one year and can be renewed annually while eligible, starting 30 days before expiry. If you do not renew, free access ends. Its renewal page also says documents in Autodesk cloud services remain available for 30 days after Education access expires.
That is a reason to save coursework before losing access, not just to set a renewal reminder. Check which storage service you use, retrieve needed files and verify a copy opens. Do not assume the same retention rule applies to every vendor or every storage product.
A student discount can still be an annual paid commitment
Adobe's billing help explains that introductory student and teacher pricing applies only for the first year, with standard Student Teacher Edition subscription rates at renewal. It also distinguishes an annual plan paid monthly from a month-to-month subscription and warns that early cancellation of the annual plan may incur a termination fee.
Do not turn an introductory monthly figure into a guaranteed second-year price. Save the total commitment, next renewal amount, currency and order-specific cancellation terms. For any trial that asks for a card, verify whether it ends or starts charging, and save cancellation confirmation if you leave.
Check country, school and licence separately
Enrolment is only one eligibility question. Read the current offer's country list, institution requirements, age rules and application deadline before sending documents. The offer pages linked below are starting points, not a guarantee that every listed promotion is available in your country today.
A free educational licence is not automatically a commercial licence. JetBrains' Student Pack FAQ restricts its student IDE licences to non-commercial educational purposes; Autodesk also excludes commercial and professional use from its Education Offering. Those specific restrictions do not establish a blanket rule for Figma, Notion or every other student product. Check the licence for the tool and work you actually plan to do.
Make one renewal record you can use at graduation
Use these fields for each account: vendor and plan; account owner; eligibility and verification date; access expiry; next amount and currency; billing commitment; cancellation cutoff; export or retrieval deadline; official evidence URL; and a saved order confirmation. These fields are our suggested checklist, not a vendor requirement.
For example, an account could have student validation ending in June but a partner benefit ending in February. This is an illustrative timeline, not an advertised offer. A single graduation reminder would miss the February deadline. Set separate reminders for revalidation, cancellation and retrieving files when the documented dates differ.
Ask school IT before buying a duplicate subscription
Ask whether your institution already provides the specific application you need, who controls that account and what happens when your school email closes. Personal student offers and institution-managed access are different arrangements. Do not assume either account will survive graduation.
Before moving coursework to a personal account, check export formats, ownership and whether collaborators keep access. Avoid uploading grades, identity documents or classmates' information to an unrelated tool just to try a promotion. For paid client work, resolve the licence requirement before starting the project, not after the invoice.

Does GitHub Student Developer Pack approval activate every partner offer?
No. GitHub's terms separate student validation from each partner's conditions. Inspect the current offer and redemption steps; do not assume every subscription or credit was activated.
Will free student software charge me when access expires?
That depends on the offer and any billing agreement you accepted. Record whether access ends, requires revalidation or starts a paid term. A payment-card request is a reason to read the conversion terms, not proof of a universal rule.
Can I use a student licence for paid client work?
Check the exact licence. JetBrains student IDE licences and Autodesk Education access have educational-use restrictions. Do not apply those restrictions automatically to unrelated products.
