Software renewal traps: what to check before year two
Check renewal prices, auto-renewal, student eligibility and access after expiry. A practical checklist with official vendor sources.
Separate three dates before comparing the price
A subscription can have a payment date, a contract end date and a discount expiry date. They are not necessarily the same. Paying every month does not, by itself, mean you can leave a contract every month without a charge.
Start with the exact plan and country on your order. Record the amount due now, the full commitment and the next renewal amount if it is stated. If the future price is not confirmed, mark it as unknown instead of assuming that today's promotion will continue.
Adobe: annual paid monthly is not month-to-month
Adobe's US subscription help distinguishes annual plans paid monthly, annual prepaid plans and month-to-month plans. For the annual plan paid monthly, it describes a cancellation fee of 50% of the remaining contract balance after the first 14 days.
That is a US-plan example, not a rule for every country or subscription. Follow the terms attached to your own purchase. A promotional monthly amount is not enough information to calculate the cost of leaving early.
JetBrains: a reminder still requires action
JetBrains says students and teachers who remain in a full-time educational program can renew a free educational licence for another year. Renewal uses the link in the JetBrains Account or the reminder email sent two weeks before expiry.
The reminder is not proof that renewal has already happened. Set your own reminder, complete the process and check the new expiry date. Do not treat continued eligibility as an automatic extension.
Microsoft Education: plan for access after expiry
Microsoft's Office 365 Education FAQ says that, when the plan expires, Office applications enter a view-only mode and associated online services such as Office Online and OneDrive stop working. Eligibility may be checked again.
Ask your institution's administrator about the timing and export arrangements before leaving. Keep an accessible copy of work you are entitled to retain. Do not assume that a document being stored somewhere means you will still be able to open or edit it through the same account.
A discount period is not a universal renewal rule
Read the offer you actually have. A student offer, an NGO discount, an introductory commercial price and an annual-billing rate can have different durations, even at the same vendor.
For the other offers linked below, check the current vendor terms for automatic charging, reapplication, expiry and the next price. We have not verified every renewal policy in this review, so the links are starting points, not a guarantee that an old promotion is still available.
Missing refund wording does not mean there is no policy
A pricing page is not always where a vendor publishes cancellation or refund rules. Check the subscription terms, billing help and the confirmation attached to your order. Keep cancellation of future renewals separate from a request to refund an amount already paid.
If you cannot find the applicable terms, ask support before paying. Record the plan, billing country and purchase channel in the question. An unanswered question is uncertainty, not evidence that a refund is impossible or guaranteed.
Use a renewal checklist you can actually maintain
For each subscription, record the plan, account owner, payment interval, contract end, discount expiry, next amount and currency, renewal method, cancellation deadline, and export requirements. Keep a link or saved copy of the applicable vendor terms.
Set a reminder before the decision deadline, not just on the charge date. After cancelling or renewing, keep the confirmation and check the account status. For team tools, assign one person to the decision so a reminder does not become everybody's responsibility and nobody's task.
A renewal record, without guessing missing terms| Record | What to confirm |
|---|
| Payment interval | How often money is collected |
|---|
| Commitment | How long the contract lasts |
|---|
| Discount expiry | When an introductory or eligibility rate ends |
|---|
| Renewal | Automatic charge, manual action or expiry |
|---|
| Next amount | Currency, tax, seats, usage and any stated price change |
|---|
| Decision deadline | When cancellation or reapplication must be completed |
|---|
| Access and export | What stops working, and how to retain permitted work |
|---|
| Evidence | Terms link, order confirmation and written support answer |
|---|
Use the terms for your plan and country. If a term is not stated, record it as unknown and ask the vendor before committing.
What this review covers
The Adobe, JetBrains and Microsoft sources below were checked on September 26, 2026. This guide is research into published terms, not a hands-on cancellation test or a determination of your contractual rights.
A vendor can change its terms, and your original agreement may matter. Confirm the terms that apply to your account before acting. Some linked StackOnSale offer pages contain disclosed affiliate links; a commission does not establish a product's renewal or refund policy.
Questions
Does paying monthly mean I can cancel without a fee?
No. Check whether the contract is month-to-month or annual with monthly payments. The payment interval alone does not establish the cancellation terms.
Does a renewal reminder mean my licence will renew automatically?
No. JetBrains' educational renewal instructions, for example, require using a renewal link. Confirm the action required and the new expiry date in your account.
Does no refund wording on a pricing page mean no refunds?
No. Look at the applicable subscription terms, billing help and purchase confirmation. If the policy remains unclear, ask the vendor rather than inferring an answer.
Should I remove my card to stop a subscription?
Use the vendor's cancellation process and keep its confirmation. Do not assume changing a payment method ends a contractual commitment.
