AI coding tools: free plans, usage limits and the real bill
Compare Replit, Warp, Zed, Cursor, Copilot and Claude by included usage, extra charges and annual cost. A free editor does not always mean free AI.

Three annual base budgets
USD before tax and extra usage. These tools have different workflows and allowances; matching prices do not mean matching features.

| Plan | Recorded price | Billing and limits | Before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replit Core | $216/year | Calculated: $18 × 12, billed annually | Check the shared AI/cloud credit balance and hard budget limit before paid work. |
| Warp Build | $216/year | Calculated: $18 × 12, billed annually | Additional credits and auto-reload can change the final bill. Review the spend cap. |
| Claude Pro | $200/year | Vendor's stated annual total, paid upfront | Includes Claude Code with usage limits. The rounded monthly badge is not the annual invoice. |
Start with the bill, not just the subscription
Separate three costs: the base subscription, additional AI usage, and anything you run or host with the tool. Two plans with the same monthly headline can include different amounts of model usage and different spending controls.
This is a review of vendor pricing and billing documentation, not a hands-on coding benchmark. Dollar amounts below use the vendors' US-dollar prices before tax; annual calculations exclude extra usage. Check the selected billing period and your account's spending settings before paying.
Replit and Warp: an allowance is not unlimited usage
Replit Core lists $20 with monthly billing or $18 per month billed annually. Its included monthly credits are $20. Replit's billing documentation says credits can cover Agent and cloud services such as published apps, storage and databases, so hosting and coding can draw from the same balance.
Paid Agent work uses effort-based pricing. Replit documents a free mode, confirmation before paid actions, usage alerts and hard budget limits. An alert tells you about spending; a budget cap is the control to inspect if you want work to stop. The usage dashboard can take up to 30 minutes to update.
Warp Build lists $20 monthly or $18 per month on annual billing and includes 1,500 credits, described as $20 of agent usage at API rates. Extra credits, auto-reload and a team-wide spend cap are separate parts of the billing setup. Additional charges are possible, not inevitable: check whether extra usage is enabled and what cap applies.
Zed: the editor is free; your model provider may not be
Zed Personal is listed at $0 and includes 2,000 accepted edit predictions. It also supports your own API keys or external agents. That does not make those services free: any provider subscription, token bill or local hardware cost is separate from the editor price.
Zed Pro is $10 per month with unlimited edit predictions and $5 of monthly hosted-model credits. Additional hosted usage is billed at the model's API list price plus 10%, and Zed offers a spending cap. Compare predictions and model tokens separately; they are not the same allowance.
Cursor and Copilot both have free options
Cursor Hobby needs no credit card and includes limited Agent requests plus access to Composer. Do not read a free plan as unlimited agent work. Cursor also describes separately billed on-demand usage for paid accounts; inspect that setting before enabling more usage.
GitHub offers Copilot Free with limited features for eligible individual users who do not receive Copilot access through an organisation or enterprise. You do not need to be a student to have a free Copilot option.
Copilot Student is a separate benefit for verified students. GitHub checks eligibility monthly, and approval and activation are separate steps that can take several days to complete. If a student benefit still shows paid checkout, GitHub advises waiting and checking activation rather than purchasing it.
Compare the annual total, not a rounded monthly badge
Replit Core and Warp Build each advertise $18 per month billed annually versus $20 on monthly billing. The calculated base cost is $216 for twelve months versus $240 paid month to month, a $24 saving, or 10%. This does not include extra credits, hosting or taxes.
Claude Pro lists $200 paid upfront for a year versus $20 monthly. Twelve monthly payments total $240, so the annual saving is $40, about 16.67%. The $17 monthly figure on the pricing page is rounded; use the explicit $200 annual total. Claude Code is included in Pro, but usage limits still apply.
These are billing comparisons within each product, not proof that the tools do equivalent work. Annual billing can make sense after a trial on your own tasks; the discount alone does not establish that a year-long commitment fits your needs.
Measure one real task before choosing a bigger plan
Choose a small bug fix or refactor you actually need. Record the starting usage balance, the selected model and mode, the work completed, any extra charge, and the time needed to review the result. Use a free allowance or a monthly plan you already have; there is no need to buy several subscriptions just to compare them.
Repeat with a more demanding task if your work varies. Set a conservative spending cap before testing, and remember that a hard cap may stop work or affect hosted services. This is a suggested evaluation method, not a prediction of how much AI will save you.
Choose a workflow, then check the purchase conditions
An editor, a coding assistant, a terminal and an app-hosting environment solve overlapping but different problems. Check compatibility with your project, required extensions, team policies and deployment needs before comparing the subscription prices. Include the effort of switching tools in your decision without assuming a fixed learning time.
Before buying, write down the total due now, the included usage, how extra usage is authorised, the renewal date and cancellation terms. Open the relevant offer below for its official proof and conditions. Our catalogue link for Copilot covers the student benefit; the general Free plan is documented separately in the official sources.
Questions
Can I code with AI without a paid subscription?
Cursor Hobby and Copilot Free provide limited free access, and Zed Personal is a free editor with an edit-prediction allowance. Zed's support for your own API key does not include free usage from that model provider. Verified students can separately qualify for Copilot Student.
Will the subscription be my whole bill?
It can be, if you stay within included usage and do not purchase extras. Replit and Warp allow additional usage, while Zed Pro bills hosted tokens beyond its credit allowance. Check spending caps, reload settings and any separate hosting or provider charges.
How much do annual plans actually save?
For Replit Core and Warp Build, $18 × 12 is $216 versus $20 × 12, or $240: a $24 base-subscription saving. Claude Pro explicitly bills $200 annually versus $240 across twelve monthly payments. Extra usage and taxes are excluded.
Is Copilot only free for students?
No. Copilot Free is also available to eligible individual users. Copilot Student is a different plan requiring GitHub Education verification and activation; eligibility is reevaluated monthly.
Does this guide rank the best coding model?
No. It compares published pricing and billing conditions. Test a representative task, review the generated changes and check your team's requirements before choosing a tool.
